Gena Perala is a singer, songwriter, and poet always out to challenge the way she and the people around her live and think. She spent much of her childhood summers on the Carnival Circuit with her parents, which could explain her astute lyrical insight into human nature and the world around us. This, combined with her intimacy on stage and vulnerability within her work, creates an atmosphere of poignancy and revelation. She works with an inspiring amount of determination, consistently expanding her talent and moving her audiences through both poetry and music. Her writing is raw, it's real and it's relevant.
Gena started performing and competing in the Vancouver Poetry Slam before she found her guitar and her voice. Since then she has performed for The United Nations, the PNE main Stage, The Harmony Arts Festival and the Jewish Writers Festival to name a few. Most recently Gena Perala will be featured in Traveling, a film staring Jennifer Aniston and Aaron Eckhart. She is also featured in the documentary "Fixing Capitalism" www.fixingcapitalism.ca and was the winner of the Rock the Vote Audio Contest, from which she was awarded $1500.00 for telling people why it is important to vote.
Gena has published two books of poetry “I’m a Worst Case Scenario Type of Girl” and “Clean Getaway” and her debut solo album “This ain’t Pretty” can be heard on CBC, as well as many independent radio stations worldwide. It is available at www.cdbaby.com and iTunes. You can also catch Gena performing in and around Vancouver with her band TomGirl.
